Prices are almost equal when comparing like for like, both the scale of the installation and the installer.
What we have seen in the UK and I am sure is seen elsewhere is that what I would call 'Marketing' companies that have moved on from Double Glazing to Timeshare now Solar heating have latched onto vacuum tubes as they appear higher tech!
So, while the typical flat plate will cost say £3,500, an equivalent vacuum tune system will be promoted for £9,000, with an option to reduce to £7,000 if paid for now!
But, the systems when sold through legitimate suppliers are almost identical in cost. See: http://www.solarkent.co.uk/solar-water-heating/comparison.asp
Comparing effectiveness, reliability and longevity is another thing.
